welcome

The irish painter Ann Mc Cormick lives and works in Berlin since 2006.

Her recent work is based on various threads of reference. She draws her main inspiration from the city, where she lives. The city's architecture and streets, it's world of built interiors and exteriors. Materially she enhances her work by using objects which she finds in her local environment. She approaches her pieces from a classical abstract perspective, coaxing colour and materials into fragile objects, ensembles and medium-scale installations.

Another area of influence are the colour theory principles of the colorfield painters where there is a merging of the systematic with the pure sensation of colour approach to painting. On one side, the artist's work shows an appreciation of Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park city landscapes. Here, pure, unmodulated colour planes, interact with each other and with the integrated materials in an abstract formal way. Colour moves into the realm of 3 dimensions but remains two dimensional. Creating quirky compositions of lyrical abstractions.

On the other hand her work nods knowingly to the compositions of Kasimir Malevich who made abstractions derived from aerial landscapes and his fundamenally reductionist use of space and form.

Mc Cormicks equally intuitive and systematic method lends a poetic quality to her work. The artist relates the transitory nature of things to our materialism, thus questioning our claim for eternity.
